Rockets 2024, Thursday, April 25th North Texas Launch Site Prep Day

The SystemsGo team and volunteers spent Wednesday and Thursday at the site in North Texas, near Jacksboro in Jack County,  transforming the Brown  and Thornton family ranches into a launch site,  once again for this year’s 2024 NTX launch.  Friday morning, marks opening day for this Texas launch venue, as schools, students, and test vehicles arrive for the Rockets 2024 launch line up.

This is the event’s fifth active year in this location. The ranches used here in Jack county are courtesy of the Brown family for Stage 1, 2 and Event Parking, and the Thornton family for Stage 3, Mission Control and launching.

This year’s event is sponsored by Lockheed Martin as well as Tellus of Stephenville who supplied the ATV’s used by recovery. Bert Mikosh of CredenceIO Technologies was instrumental in installing Starlink WIFI  to support our technology and communications. And The Sid W. Richardson Foundation is the original founding sponsor for SystemsGo for this event.

The featured picture at the head of this article, shows a little about the range land this particular launch event calls home. The signage shows the sense of irony and humor our group has. After all, placement is everything!

Concessions for this year’s launch event in Jacksboro, were to be provided by Brazos Volunteer Fire Department .  Unfortunately due the predictions of inclement weather possible in the area, they had to cancel in order to be able to provide timely support around their community in the event weather hazards arise. Due to this we ask that all teachers, etc. bring food, drinks, and snacks for your students and other members in your party.

Restrooms and wash stations will be provided by Mobile Thrones  again this year, both at the launch site and the Stage 1 and 2, Event parking site.

A spectator tent will NOT be available on site this year. Teachers and Spectators are encouraged to bring 10×10 pop up tents for themselves and their students for extra shelter. Please remember sunscreen, chairs, umbrellas, extra snacks, drinks, and food.  Downtime entertainment for the students to engage in between launches may also be helpful.

Rockets are subject to winds, weather and workmanship, all of which can stall a launch, and delay schedules. Sunday is our built in weather contingency day should we need to delay launches. All rockets and students should proceed through Stages 1, 2, and 3 at their assigned times each day so that each vehicle can be completed and be ready for launch if possible. If delays happen the completed rockets will be stored in a trailer until the next available, safe launch spot becomes available, either that day, or subsequent days as circumstances allow.

Parents are asked to ride with their students in the school buses from Stage 1 and 2. Other spectators will have provided parking, watch for signage marking that area and instructions on how you will be brought in  from there. We will not be shuttling spectators to the launch site this year.

Jacksboro is the first Texas launch for the Rockets 2024 season but the second launch in the SystemsGo launch line up for the spring rocket trail. SystemsGo New Mexico held the first launch, in Jal, New Mexico, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. North Texas will be followed by launches in  Central Texas/Stonewall and Southeast Texas/Smith Point.

North Texas/Jack County, is hosting 8 schools, slated to test 44 rockets  Friday and Saturday. Sunday is set as a contingency day in case of inclement weather. Storms are possible due to a cold front moving through the area with the highest possibilities being Saturday and Sunday. Due to this watch for possible weather delays and schedule changes. Hopefully they will not be necessary, but the possibility looms.

  • The sites will be open to admittance for students and teachers only at 6:00 a.m. Projected start time for launches is 9:00 a.m. All is contingent on test vehicle readiness and ability to pass Stages 1 and 2. Mission Control will be ready for Stage 3 checks by 8:00 a.m.

Rockets 2023, Wednesday North Texas Launch Site Transformation Day

The SystemsGo team and volunteers spent Wednesday at the site in North Texas, near Jacksboro in Jack County,  transforming the Brown  and Thornton family ranches into a launch site, Stages 1 and 2 check-in stations, and Event parking areas once again for this year’s 2023 NTX launch. Most preparations were completed today. Only a few last minute tasks are left for Thursday morning, before the arrival of schools, students, and test vehicles for the Rockets 2023 launch line up.  Tomorrow, Thursday, marks opening day for this Texas launch venue.

This is the event’s fourth active year in this location. The ranches used here in Jack county are courtesy of the Brown family for Stage 1, 2 and Event Parking, and the Thornton family for Mission Control and launching.

The Sid W. Richardson Foundation is the founding sponsor for SystemsGo for this event. A new sponsor for this year is Lockheed Martin Corporation.

May 2, 2022, Rockets 2022 Continues Today in Colorado!!!

The Rockets 2022 season transitioned to Colorado today. This is a brand new launch venue for SystemsGo. Canon City HS joined the SystemsGo program in 2021 and came to Stonewall for their first launch that same year.  They had one Tsiolkovsky level rocket.

The featured picture for this article is the class from this high school from last year’s launch.

The current roster for this new venue still only boasts Canon City with four rockets this year. Two Tsiolkovsky and two Oberth.

They are opening this launch to other Colorado schools to come and view the program up close. Hopefully this will add numbers in both schools and rockets  for future participation allowing the program to grow in the Colorado area.

This new launch site is at the U.S. Army Fort Carson Colorado, Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. It is a one day launch, today, Monday, May 2, 2022.

The site is open to public viewing of the launches.  Unfortunately this launch will not have live streaming.

North Texas Launch Site Rockets 2022 Wednesday Set Up

The SystemsGo team and volunteers spent Wednesday traveling to the site in North Texas, near Jacksboro in Jack County, and then transforming the Brown  and Thornton family ranches into a launch site, Stages 1 and 2 check in stations, and Event parking areas once again for this year’s 2022 NTX launch. Most preparations were completed today. Only a few last minute tasks are left for Thursday morning, and then all will be completed for the arrival of schools, students, and test vehicles for the Rockets 2022 launch line up.  Tomorrow, Thursday, marks opening day for this Texas launch venue.

Six launch rails are ready to keep everyone’s  #EyesOnTheSkies, as participants test their vehicles, to either send a payload a mile in the sky or break the speed of sound.

Rockets 2021 Continues Today in Jal, New Mexico!!!

The Rockets 2021 season transitioned to New Mexico this week after three weekends on the Texas Rocket Trail.  New Mexico launches are the fourth for the Tsiolkovsky and Oberth levels.

The current rosters list 8 schools participating in the Jal, New Mexico launch,  where they will be testing 16 rockets. This is the fourth active year for this venue.

Their numbers in both schools and rockets are down in New Mexico since the 2019 season, just as they were in Texas, due to schools navigating COVID parameters.

Jal, New Mexico:

  • Tuesday, May  11 – Thursday, May 13
  • Returning to the launch site on Phillips Hill Road near Jal.
  • Schools participating: Fort Sumner HS, Grady HS, Hagerman HS, Jal HS, Lovington HS, Alamogordo HS, Dora HS, Portales HS
  • 16 expected rockets for testing
  • Tuesday, May 11, 2021
  • 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Jal High School
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Alamogordo High School
  • 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Dora High School
  • Wednesday, May 12th, 2021
  • 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Lovington High School
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Ft. Sumner High School
  • 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Portales High School
  • Thursday, May 13th, 2021
  • 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Hagerman High School
  • 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Grady High School

I am not sure exactly how the time frame on these launches will actually work. The block form of the schedule is a little different than the Texas schedules were. I know in Texas it depended on which schools’ rockets made it through Stages 1, 2, and 3 as to when and what order they launched.  In Jal they have a block 3 hour time frame for each school. I don’t really know how all the Stages factor in so it should be interesting to watch how the launches progress through the day.

Of course rockets are subject to winds, weather and workmanship, all of which can stall a launch. Come join in the action and cheer on these students on the Livsestream. Even though spectators and family cannot be there in person, just knowing you are watching them and cheering them on will boost their morale and bolster their success for their vehicles launch. Besides then you still get to see the look on your students’ faces when their vehicle goes up and then is recovered. That alone, is from priceless.

The senior groups are tentatively scheduled to launch their Goddard level rockets at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico in late June. Right now these are still very tentative.  News on this may be available in the next few weeks.  These are not available for public viewing or Livestream due to being tested on a military facility, but blog and SystemsGo updates will be posted online as available during that week.

Rockets 2021 North Texas Launch Tuesday and Wednesday Set Up

The SystemsGo team and volunteers spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the venue in North Texas at Jack County. They were busy transforming the Brown  and Thornton family ranches into a rocket ready launch site, check in stations for Stages 1 and 2, and Event parking areas. After a few last minute tasks Thursday morning, all will be completed for the arrival of schools, students, and test vehicles for the Rockets 2021 launch line up.  Tomorrow, Thursday, is opening day for this Texas launch venue, as well as the Rockets 2021 season.

This year’s season is dedicated to former SystemsGo operative and friend, Dayni Alba. Dayni spent many years with the launch teams working the Fill and Fire box. This will the groups’ first season without her. A banner in her honor will fly at each launch this season. Ride the skies Dayni, you are loved and missed. IMG_0410 - Copy (2)

Excitement in anticipation for this event is high as the team worked hard for the return to rockets once again after a year off due to COVID. They are ready to accept all participants and their rockets promptly Thursday morning. The site will have six launch rails ready to keep everyone’s  #EyesOnTheSkies.

The sites will be open to admittance for students and teachers only at 6:00 a.m. Projected start time for launches is 8:30 a.m. All is contingent on test vehicle readiness and ability to pass Stages 1 and 2. Mission Control will be ready for Stage 3 checks by 8:00 a.m.

As for the rest of you, join in the action and cheer on these students on the Livestream. The look on your students’ faces when their vehicle goes up and then is recovered, and knowing you are watching and supporting them, is far from priceless.  Shoot them a text, letting them know you are watching online.

Rockets 2019 New North Texas/Jacksboro Saturday Launch and Mission Complete

Saturday, Day 2 for North Texas Rockets 2019 launch series was a high flying success as we ended our stint in Jacksboro. The new crew sent 12 rockets skyward for 5 different schools. Recovery did an awesome job bringing them back to the schools. This was a brand new venue this year, and most staff and volunteers from the area were also new. They were all a wonderful group that learned fast and performed well.

It all went well without any serious mishaps. This new location and crew from the area has a lot to be happy about as they all helped SystemsGo create another fantastic launch event.

One of the best accomplishments aside from the launch itself is the exposure to new parents and communities as to what these students and classes are really doing. This has brought new enthusiasm to the event and a new host of possible support staff for the future of the event as they have actually been able to see the excitement their students have  for the program, as well as what they are learning. Also they now see first hand what it takes to put on these events so that the students can test these vehicles. At the end of the day, support and enthusiasm for the program was high. This is a great thing for the future of the event here in North Texas.

Afterwards the SystemsGo team and volunteers dismantled the site, sending bunkers and other equipment to storage for next year’s launch season. Instead of finishing the launch series at around 8:30 like last night, we were all going to our rooms for much-needed rest after a wonderful dinner together. We ended the event well and now march on to the next one.

A whole-hearted thanks is extended to all who helped make this launch possible.

North Texas was the second launch in the 2019 series, preceded by the Jal, New Mexico launch, and followed  next by  Central Texas/Stonewall and Southeast Texas/Smith Point.

Rockets 2019 New North Texas Launch Site, Friday Launches

Today was the first day for  the new venue in North Texas  at Jack County as part of the SystemsGo Rockets 2019 program.  Seven schools attempted 22 rockets of which all rockets left the pad  successfully. A few of the later day Transonics took a couple of attempts but did accomplish lift off. It was a great first launch day in Jack County.

It was a long day. the first rocket didn’t launch until 11:30 and the last was 8:30. The crew was really beat but proud to say they got them all off the rails. University High School with started the flights with 6 of their 7 vehicles completing the whole first volley. Buinger and Hollenstein High Schools ended the day with their Transonics.

Tomorrow the schedule shows 6 schools and 16 rockets. There may be 17 as a late school may have been added.

All  the vehicles except about 8 were recovered for the day. Hopefully these will be found along with tomorrow’s line up. Team 1 is proud to report that we found six ourselves. Admittedly though they were a lot further and required a lot more hiking than  we had planned.

George Burns provided a shuttle service from the spectator parking to the site today and will again tomorrow. He brought up one of his 290 Wine Tours buses to transport people back and forth.

Restrooms and concessions will be provided at the launch site. A spectator tent will also be available. Please remember sunscreen, chairs, umbrellas, extra snacks and drinks,

The launch site is in Jacksboro area, while Stages 1 and 2 are at the Fire Department in nearby Perrin.

Patience is a normal requirement with test vehicles, as they don’t adhere to schedules well.  In fact, rockets are subject to winds, weather and workmanship, all of which can stall a launch.

Admittance for public viewing  begins at 8:00 a.m. and launches will commence at 8:30 a.m. if all goes right. Today didn’t follow that schedule pre-set schedule well at all. Come join in the action and cheer on these students. Admission is free, but the look on your students’ faces when their vehicle goes up and then is recovered, is far from priceless.

If you plan to attend these launches please register for your attendance ticket ahead of time or obtain them at the gate. These are free but required for admittance to each site as they also include a waiver for access to the site. that must be signed. Reserving them ahead at the website is preferred to obtaining them at the gate because the latter slows entrance to the site and may result in you missing the viewing of your intended launch. Rockets 2019 New North Texas Launch Site, Wednesday/Thursday Set Up

The SystemsGo team and volunteers spent Wednesday evening and all day Thursday at the brand new venue in North Texas at Jack County. They were readying both the launch site in the Jacksboro area and check out stations for stages 1 and 2, at the Fire Department in nearby Perrin, to be complete for the arrival of schools, students, and test vehicles for the Rockets 2019 launch line up.  Tomorrow, Friday,  is opening day for  this new Texas launch site for the junior level rockets.

Excitement is high as the team worked hard to be sure everything would be ready to accept all participants and their rockets promptly tomorrow morning. The new site will have six launch rails ready to send Rockets out to #RideTheSkies.

The team and volunteers have worked hard and had a lot of fun getting ready to host the students. A special thanks is extended to Mr. Buck Brown and his family for the use of their ranches this weekend. A few of us were able to meet him and his brother, Barry Brown,  this evening, while installing signs at the public parking area.

Mr. Brett Williams, the program’s originator, used to say that it took a million things to go right to get these rockets to launch, and only one thing going wrong to prevent them from launching.

Jacksboro is the first Texas launch for the Rockets 2019 season. It will be followed by launches in  Central Texas/Stonewall, and Southeast Texas/Smith Point, Texas. It follows the SystemsGo New Mexico launch, which was last week in Jal, New Mexico.

North Texas/Jack County, is hosting 12 schools, slated to test 39 rockets Friday and Saturday. In past years many of these schools launched at the Central Texas launch, formerly held in Willow City, north of Fredericksburg. This new venue gives them a launch site much closer to their schools.

Rockets 2019 Season Boasts a Successful Start at Jal, New Mexico Last Week!!!

The Rockets 2019 Season kicked off last week with a thrilling launch series in Jal, New Mexico. According to reports from SystemsGo Program Director, Rebekah Hyatt and SystemsGo New Mexico head, Dave willden, 32 rockets sailed the skies over New Mexico, successfully.

“It was an exciting start to the SystemsGo Rockets 2019 season!” -Rebekah Hyatt.

Many volunteers joined Willden and his staff, Kelley Alsup, Naira Mendoza and Christine Hendershot –  of the PVREC #8  to coordinate and carry out this outstanding event.

Superintendent, Brian Snider, and Pricipal, Elaine O’Neal graciously loaned the use of their schools for Stage 1 and 2, to which SystemsGo would like to extend a special thanks.

SystemsGo New Mexico is continuing to grow, so keep your “Eyes to the Skies” for next year’s rocket event.
