Rockets 2017 Begins Next Week With a New Venue in New Mexico

The launch of Rockets 2017 blasts skyward on April 27th from a brand new venue this year as six schools from New Mexico join the SystemsGo program. Last year instructors from these schools came to Willow City to observe, learn and participate in launches in order to implement the program at a new site in New Mexico.

SystemsGo New Mexico is headed up by David Willden and currently includes the schools of Carlsbad High School, Hobbs High School, Jal High School, Lake Arthur High School, Loving High School and Lovington High School. This is their first year in the program and they will attempt launching a total of 10 one pound/one mile rockets at a location near Jal, New Mexico. This new site, called the Discovery Education Launch Pad, will be open to public viewing of launches, as are all sites except White Sands Missile Range this year. The site will be open for admittance at 8:00 a.m. and launches will commence at 8:30 a.m.

If you plan to attend Jal or any of this year’s launches please register for your attendance ticket at http://www.systemsgo.org/save-the-date-for-rockets-2017/ or they may be gotten at the gate. These are free but required for admittance to each site. Reserving them ahead at the website is preferred to obtaining them at the gate because the latter slows entrance to the site and may result in you missing the viewing of your intended launch.

If you are in the Jal, New Mexico area, keep an eye out for this new vehicle. It just rolled out recently to support the new launch group.

If you follow this program and like to view the launches, Rockets 2017 will continue with two more launches in May. The first will be held in Smith Point just south of Anahuac, Texas for schools in the Houston area, on the weekend of May 12-14, 2017. If you have been to the Houston area launches in the past you may want to check out the SystemsGo website for information because this is a new location for that area this year. Information and a map link are available.

Next the Stewart Ranch in Willow City, Texas will host the largest of the now three launch events on the weekend of May 18-21, 2017. This testing site covers the Fredericksburg and Hill Country area schools and all Texas schools not participating in the Houston launches.

The senior groups are tentatively scheduled to launch their Goddard level rockets at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico the week of June 26-30. These are not available for public viewing or Livestream due to being tested on a military facility, but blog and SystemsGo updates will be posted online as available during that week.

Fredericksburg, Houston Done-Next Stop White Sands Missile Range

The SystemsGo team made it home safely, around midnight Monday morning after a very wet and soggy couple of days of launching in Clute, Texas, down south of Houston. In spite of weather they were still able to accommodate the schools on the roster for the weekend. Some of them had to be moved to Sunday due to a bad storm that shut launches down early on Saturday. This same storm unfortunately soaked all the electronic equipment shutting down the Livestream permanently for the rest of the weekend.

The recovery teams spent days wading in water to recover rockets for the schools. Several storms went over the area during the two days, delaying launches and adding even more water to an already water drenched range. Even so, it was still a successful weekend for the team and the schools participating.

With Fredericksburg and Houston rocket launches complete for the 2016 season, SystemsGo and the schools with 4th year STEM classes in the program focus solely on finishing the Goddard level rockets. These much larger scale vehicles will travel to White Sands Missile Range(WSMR) the last week in June to launch. At the moment, these launches are scheduled for June 27 through July 1. That is still subject to change as the Army determines need, all the way up to the day they leave. Preliminary estimates look good though that they may stay as currently planned. As the time moves closer I will post updates to let everyone be aware of the exact dates. Of course, there is no public access or live feeds from this launch because it is on a military base and is heavily guarded and controlled.

I will continue to provide information on the program in upcoming weeks. Watch for upcoming articles with interviews with past students from the program and how SystemsGo and the STEM program helped shape and influence their lives.

Event details will also continue to be available here. As schools and schedules finalize I will provide a list of those schools traveling to WSMR. The week of the launches I will provide information as made available to me from team members on site as to how launches have gone for those schools shooting on that particular day. Pictures are not allowed on the range, but some of teams getting ready to leave for the range with their vehicles might be available. If anything is available and passed on, I will post it for your viewing pleasure.

Houston Rockets 2016-Sunday

Sorry I am late again today! I had to get a certain US Navy girl to the airport first. So I’m in the airport posting from my phone. Sure hope it works! Safe travels Kasey Burow! We will miss you!

Yesterday, a storm late in the afternoon soaked the electronics equipment, taking out the Livestream for the weekend. Launches continued though. I will still post the link just in case you want to see some of the previous feeds.

Today the SystemsGo team will have three more schools and eleven more rockets to launch plus yesterday’s group that cancelled because of rain,before packing the whole site up again and heading back to Fredericksburg. This schedule is a rigorous one for them that makes for a really long day. So for their sake, I hope that all the launches go off quickly and perfectly so that they can get done early and get on the road. Please no 3:30 am arrival time back in Fritztown again this year. Rain has already been a big factor for them today with storms rolling through adding water to an already water-logged range.

Houston Rockets 2016 Day 1-Saturday

Ok, folks sorry this is so late. My computer decided to do an update this morning that I tried to stop it from but it won.

Today is the first day of Houston rocket launches. I had reports that the team was at the site at 8:30 this morning getting rockets ready to launch. The site was covered in running creeks and swamps. Check my Facebook page and I will post the pictures of this that Steve Burow from recovery sent in this morning. Unfortunately snakes and alligators are quite prevalent at the site as well.

Even with all this launches are going on. I realize that by now most of you have probably found the schedule on the SystemsGo site which I have made available in all my previous posts, but I will post it again here. Obviously by now they should be well into it by now. Unfortunately I can’t get it to load on mine so you will just have to follow the link and see for yourself. Here it is. I have had a report of a storm going through the area and that has put the feed down for the day. It will hopefully be back for tomorrow, but crews are unsure right now because the equipment did get soaked and has to dry out.I will still post the link just in case early feed may still be available.

Houston Rockets 2016- Travel & Set up

The StsytemsGo team left Thursday after noon headed to Clute, Texas down by Lake Jackson, which is south of Houston. They arrived safely at their hotel at 7:44 that evening. Today, they are busy setting up the launch site, and readying everything for an early start tomorrow.

Launches will be all day tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday with 12 schools launching a total of 27 vehicles. Hopefully weather will not give them any trouble with all the recent rains and flooding.

Please be advised that this is a very small launch site, and it doesn’t allow public access, but there will be Livestream from there again so friends and family can still watch the action.

As I mentioned previously, Phil Houseal will be traveling along with the team this year to conduct interviews on the site with students, teachers, team and other person’s of interest at this launch much like he did here at Willow City. This is a great new addition that allows the public to get a glimpse at education in motion. Get online and watch these students as they learn and share first hand.

Zach and Phil provide a great experience for both viewers at home and the students and team on site while helping to bolster the STEM program. Allowing the public to share in the actions and see what these students are accomplishing as they apply all they have learned and continue to learn from their launch results helps SystemsGo to grow interest in the future of the STEM program and the hands on approach to learning.

After Fredericksburg and Before Houston Rockets

Yesterday was the first day after Fredericksburg Rockets 2016, time to go back to work and the real world. It was my daughter, Kasey’s 21st birthday. We celebrated with her at Auslander Restaurant with good food and family. No drinks though, she just wasn’t interested. I think she has seen too much in the military with friends that drink. Not a bad thing though. We are just excited to have her home for her birthday, something that hasn’t happened in three years. Her sister, Chelsea is on the way home right now to do a little celebrating with her today since she couldn’t be here last night, so there is still more fun to be had. Congratulations Kasey on your birthday. We love you bunches!

Chelsea and Steve are heading to Houston on Thursday with SystemsGo to help schools in that area launch more vehicles. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make this trip this year so no pictures to post unless Chelsea, Phil, Steve, or other team members send me some shots. Usually I do get one or two from their phones that I can use with this blog, just no big picture posts on Facebook. They will be quite busy so I am not counting on anything like that. I do good to get daily report information to pass along for this blog, but I will get that.

This launch will be Saturday and Sunday. There will be 12 schools and 27 new rockets to send skyward. Rockets 2016-Friday Day 2 Report & Saturday Schedule

Friday was a great day for rockets. SystemsGo loaded 25 rockets onto the rails and launched all 25 rockets. Recovery teams were able to bring in 18 from today’s launches and recover a few still out from yesterday’s launches too. Transonics amassed most of those still missing in the field.

It was an amazingly smooth day, the schedule said 8:30 to 5:00 and all launches were done by about 4:30. Everyone involved appeared to be having a great time whether working, volunteering, participating as a school (student or teacher), or spectating.

KXAN news joined us today to conduct interviews with team members and get a feel for what SystemsGo does as well as all the students have to accomplish in order to build and launch these rockets. The report was supposed to air on the 6:00 edition as long as everything went well on the news crews timeline to get it edited and out on the air. It is wonderful to see attention being drawn to what these students are accomplishing, and the futures being built here by SystemsGo and their affiliate high schools.

Fredericksburg Rockets 2016-Thursday Day 1 Report & Friday Schedule

Thursday went well. It started off a little slow due to a rain delay and low ceiling. Fortunately, it burned off by lunch time and launches started lining up quickly. We had a little issue with quite a few coming down ballistic so that made recovery difficult on some where there wasn’t much visual or tracking. All in all we still had an 80% recovery rate with only 4 left in the field. Hopefully they will still be recovered before the end of the weekend.

This year is a special treat for us. We have a third party in our recovery team. Our Navy daughter is home on leave, and joined us to work recovery. We had a real good time. There was a lot of goofing around during breaks in the action. Her dad and her were quite entertaining to watch as they had plant war, trying to pelt each other with beggers lice bushes, and other burr covered plants.

Once again SystemsGo has a truly talented group of team members and volunteers that put full effort into a great experience for all the students involved.

We have a shadow group from New Mexico this year. They have recently come online with the program and are helping in all areas to try to learn and mimic what we do here in order to replicate it in New Mexico starting next year. Here’s a great shout out to them and their group, it is wonderful to have them here and on board with SystemsGo.

Rockets 2016 Only a Day Away!

The start of Rockets 2016 is just over the horizon, so now is the time to send out some reminders. The Fredericksburg launches will be held at Stewart’s Hillview Ranch in Willow City Texas. Launch days begin Thursday, May 12, continuing on Friday, May 13, Saturday, May 14 and ending on Sunday evening, May 15.

Launch times are slated to be from 8:30 to 5:00 each day provided that everything runs accordingly with weather, arrivals, and mechanical readiness. Unfortunately weather could be an issue. Right now thunderstorms are predicted for Thursday and Sunday. Of course, it is Texas weather so anything goes, and so will the rockets at each opportunity Mother Nature provides. Rain does not stop this event, only delays it until the clouds give another clear opening. That does not account for severe weather conditions that would have to be dealt with as they happen for the safety of all.

Both sites are located north of Fredericksburg off Farm to Market road 1323. Site 1 for Exhibitors and Rocket Prep is located in Willow City at the Willow City Volunteer Fire Department, located at 2553 Ranch Road 1323 . Site 2, the vehicle Launch Site is located at Hillview Ranch. Signs will be stationed along the route to direct from State Highway 16 to the individual sites. Day 19-Keeping Rockets Live

Three people devote their time out at these launches, to keeping Rockets live. They even have a trailer out there that houses a broadcasting “mission control” to ensure that all live streaming and uplinks stay active.

Zack Pooser is the main force behind allowing internet communications to go out on live streaming to everyone with a desire to watch that cannot be there. His broadcasting control trailer keeps the launch site connected.

Phil Houseal provides daily interviews with staff, students, visitors, Embry Riddle University reps, and volunteers, giving short insights to those watching as to how this program works, who is involved in it and why. He catches the stories behind the scenes that might not otherwise be heard or told about each type of experience and involvement for those in the program in one way or another.

Joyce Bk Abbey is the voice of rockets. She is the voice everyone hears commanding the attention of spectators before, during and after each launch, whether on site or watching on Livestream. She engages the students as they wait and watch for their vehicle to lift off and be recovered.

This crew of individuals is responsible for keeping rockets open for all to see during these launch weekends. They do a wonderful job of sharing this experience with everyone. They are rockets’ broadcasting extraordinaire.
