SystemsGo Rockets 2025 at White Sands Missile Range This Weekend

White Sands Missile Range is once again hosting the SystemsGo Rocket Program for its season end launches. This year four schools will be traveling to New Mexico to test their rockets at White Sands Missile Range, they include:

Alamo Heights HS

Brazoswood HS

Union Grove HS

Anahuac/Hardin Jefferson HS

June 13th through June 15th are the dates for this year’s WSMR launch.  The SystemsGo team and schools will be traveling to Alamogordo, New Mexico for lodging on June 12th. Early on the 13th, preparations at the site will be made with the goal of launching all four rockets Saturday.  The 15th, Sunday, is our contingency day, but the hope is that it will not be needed. Sunday is Father’s Day and WSMR personnel would prefer not to work and we would love to be on the road home.

ABC1 is our scheduled range again this year. ABC-1 does not have a large bunker, so only essential launch personnel stay on site, and the SG staff evacuate out five miles for launches. Students and teachers are taken to a secure location known as Tula G, which is further down range where they watch the launches on screen inside a designated facility. Due to this no extra personnel are permitted to attend these launches. All those in attendance please remember to have your state issued ID on your person at all times. WSMR will be checking them.

There will be tents on the range, the same as last year. Rockets need to be complete by the end of the day on Friday. FRR will be conducted on the 11th an 12th. Pressure checks will be retested on site the 13th to be sure the trip out to range has not compromised anything.

At this time I do not have exact information on schedules on range for Friday or Saturday. Hopefully I will be able to provide that in Thursday’s update edition.

If Mission is Complete on Saturday evening, then evening activities may include some White Sands National Park dune sledding.

White Sands Missile Range SystemsGo Rocket Program 2024

We continue to launch from range ABC1. This range required the altitude cap for the rockets to be adjusted from the original height cap which was 100,000 feet. The current cap instituted three years ago is 50,000 feet. ABC-1 does not have a large bunker, so only essential launch personnel stay on site, and the SG staff evacuate out five miles for launches. Students and teachers are taken to a secure location known as Tula G, which is further down range where they watch the launches on screen inside a designated facility.

There will be tents on the range, the same as last year. Rockets need to be complete by the end of the day on Friday.

The T-1schedule on Saturday will be very tight. Range time begins at 7:00 am and ends at 4:00 pm. The range is Hot all day for us, which translates to as soon as we can reset and be ready to launch again, WSMR is ready to assist. This should make keeping the schedule and sending all three rockets skyward a viable task for Saturday.

If Mission is Complete on Saturday evening, then evening activities may include some White Sands National Park dune sledding.

2023 Marks 25 Years White Sands Missile Range Hosts Student Rockets

2023 is a year of milestones for the Fredericksburg based STEM rocket program beginning with White Sands Missile Range hosting the SystemsGo Rocket Program again for its season end launches. This event marks the 25th year the STEM based program has brought high school seniors to the Army Base to test the program’s highest-level rockets, known as Goddard. It would have marked 25 consecutive years, but COVID took out 2020 putting the numbers behind by a year. The program took its first rocket from Fredericksburg High School to WSMR in 1999. The nonprofit organization supporting this STEM program in schools officially began in June of 2003, making this 2023 season its 20th Anniversary as well. This year three schools will be traveling to New Mexico to test their rockets at White Sands Missile Range, they include: Alamo Heights HS, Brazoswood HS and Union Grove HS.

June 23rd through June 25th are the dates for this year’s WSMR launch.  The SystemsGo team and schools will be traveling to Alamogordo, New Mexico for lodging on June 22nd. Early on the 23rd, preparations at the site will be made with the goal of launching all three rockets Saturday afternoon.  The 25th is our contingency day, but it is only a contingency for completing cleanup at the site, or if WSMR must delay our launches. It will not be a day to recycle rockets that fail.

We continue to launch from range ABC1. This range required the altitude cap for the rockets to be adjusted from the 20-mile radius the program previously had available for these test vehicles to travel and stay within their parameters. The original height cap was 100,000 feet. The current cap instituted two years ago is 50,000 feet. ABC-1 does not have a large bunker, so only essential launch personnel stay on site, and the SG staff evacuate out five miles for launches. Students and teachers are taken to a secure location known as Tula G, which is further down range where they watch the launches on screen inside a designated facility. Parents are no longer allowed to come, since the theater at Mission Control is no longer the viewing area. Volunteer staffing of base personnel for this has still not resumed.

Schools are asked to arrive early on the 22nd in Alamogordo to do pressure checks with as little time spent on configuration as possible. At least two vehicles need to have this stage complete before heading down range on the 23rd.  Preferably very little time will be spent on assembly on the 23rd. Some weight, CG, and FFR verification can be done if needed downrange the 23rd.  There will be tents on the range, the same as last year. Rockets need to be complete by the end of the day on Friday.

The first T time on Saturday will be 8:00 a.m. After that the range is Hot all day for us, which translates to as soon as we can reset and be ready to launch again, WSMR is ready to assist. This should make keeping the schedule and sending all three rockets skyward a viable task for Saturday.

WSMR personnel, including Test Center Commander, Colonel Shawanta Smart, and Range Operator, Lori Leyva, will be on site during the launches. WSMR will be providing lunch for all participants. Colonel Smart began her command in August of 2021, making this her second rocket season with the program. She stopped in last year for a brief visit, but plans to be onsite to see more of how the program operates. Ms. Leyva will be retiring after this year. Her service in coordinating SystemsGo and WSMR in launch efforts has been extremely beneficial to the program over the years she has been with us. SystemsGo will be making special presentations during the lunch break.

Saturday is a contingency day, but preferably it should be no more than a site cleanup day if needed that morning. Provided that we accomplish this early the remainder of the day’s activities will be decided at that time.

White Sands Missile Range Hosts SystemsGo’s 2022 Goddard Level Rockets in 5 Days

White Sands Missile Range has been hosting the SystemsGo Rocket Program for over 20 years, and the tradition continues for the 2022 season. Changes have been made over the years, including moving from the original launch site which was West Center 50 (WC50) to alternate range ABC1. This change came about after the COVID shut down of 2020.  Back logged government contracts took precedence for the larger range, necessitating the program’s relocation for continued support at the base.

The move to the smaller range also required the altitude cap for the rockets to be adjusted. The smaller site meant less than the 20-mile radius the program previously had available for these test vehicles to travel and stay within their parameters. The original height cap was 100,000 feet. The new cap instituted last year is 50,000 feet. ABC-1 does not have a large bunker, so only essential launch personnel stay on site, and the SG staff evacuate out five miles for launches. Students and teachers are taken to a secure location known as Tula G, which is further down range where they watch the launches on screen inside a designated facility. Due to this change, parents are no longer allowed to come. In years past parents watched from the theater at Mission Control. Unfortunately, volunteer staffing of base personnel for this is no longer available.

Stage 1 and 2 will take place on the range this year. In years past with the exception of last year, this was normal progression. Last year the Alamogordo High School hosted this part of the event. Stage 1 and 2 will take place while the SG team sets up the pad, launch rails, fill and fire system and electronics trailers. Rockets need to be complete by the end of the day on Friday as there will be very little latitude between T times to complete work on the vehicles. We are to be Mission Complete by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Sunday is a contingency day, but preferably it should not be no more than a site clean up day if needed that morning . Provided that we accomplish this early the remainder of the day’s activities will be decided at that time.

Due to higher prices for accommodations, the SG team and schools will stay at a hotel on the base.  Since we will be approaching from the Las Cruces side of the range instead of Tula Rosa, travel time will increase as speeds are slower, most are two lane roads, and range police are strict. Please check with your teachers if you need information about our accommodations, as I do not think it is appropriate to post it here since it is not outside the base. For those who are still staying off base, be sure to keep up with schedules and times as they group will need to move together with an escort through the base.

Launches are scheduled for June 25th with a contingency/cleanup day for June 26th. The team will travel out to WSMR on Wednesday, June 23rd, and back home again on the 27th.

Fredericksburg’s Engineering Rocket Program-(April 13-June 1) Final Classroom Update for Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Today is May 31, 2018 and we are catching up on the FHS Engineering program and what they have done since April 13th. This article will also bring the a fabulous year to an end for the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, since the school year is ending this Friday, June 1st, with graduation. They will all resume studies in the program next school year. After graduation, we will resume Redbird #19 updates with the graduates through June until they have launched at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR).

It has been seven weeks since our last update on the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors and quite a bit has been happening on all levels.

On Tuesday, May 15, the Freshmen embarked on a field trip to three locations. They began here in Fredericksburg, at Fischer and Wieser. Next they went on to the University of Texas at Austin to the JJ Pickle Research Center-Ferguson Structural Engineering Lab, and then a main campus tour including the Engineering Education and Research Building.

Ashley Seelig, Dietz Fischer and Nicole Whorton began the day at Fischer and Wieser giving the students a historical background on the company. Afterwards they took them on a walk through of the plant during which they described all aspects of their process, beginning with material acquisition through the shipment of products. Students found this familiar as it closely related to their orange juice production project completed earlier this year.

It was noted that the staff at Fischer and Wieser all work well with each other. They provide a comfortable working environment with a sense of family and pride in what they do.  They were all happy to host the students and show them around.

At the JJ Pickle Research Center-Ferguson Structural Engineering Lab at UT,  Dr. Tricia Clayton hosted the students. She began by discussing structural engineering and the scope of the work they do at the lab. The facility is nearly 50,000 square feet, and one of the largest labs in the country for testing and research of structures. This includes material types, fabrication process integrity, testing on pieces taken out of operation (like cracked bridge structures), train track safety and much more.

Next Dr. Clayton enlightened students on how she progressed from a high school student, to a PhD recipient, as well as a researcher and college professor.  Mr. Matthes commented that, “Her enthusiasm was contagious as her passion for her field of study and teaching bubbled to the surface.”

FHS Alumnus Matthew Dulaney,  and Sterling Weatherford took the group to lunch at the Market Place located below Dobie Dormitory. Matthew is studying Chemical Engineering at UT and Sterling who was visiting, is studying Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University. The two shared their own individual perspectives of their college experiences as they gave the students a walking tour of the main campus.

The students’ last stop was at the Engineering Education and Research Center Building. Here they found the building’s structural supports interesting, as well as a 3 story, 10 foot radius spiral staircase with only a center support structure. The main attraction was on the bottom floor. There they admired the very extensive 3D printing lab. The air conditioning was also a major hit with the students after their campus tour in the heat.

As far as class work, they have done quite a lot since the mid-April program report. They have completed their Orange Juice Production Plant project as well as a project to calculate aerodynamic drag on a rocket. They are currently trying to research and calculate the characteristics of a hybrid rocket motor. This is the aerospace component of the project.  This has helped the students reach new heights and has left them a bit overwhelmed according to Mr. Matthes.  They presented their findings in the classroom on Tuesday.

The sophomores were allowed to work through the curriculum at their own pace this year, due to that the group is spread out in their studies. While there are those that have completed the curriculum others are still working hard to get all the materials done.  Those that have completed ahead, have moved forward into 3D modelling and printing of their material findings.

Next year, a new class called Intermediate Computer Aided Drafting and Design (ICADD) will be added, allowing new students the opportunity to delve deeper into 3D modeling with AutoDesk’s program, Inventor.  This is a good thing, according to Mr. Matthes because, “The class should provide students all the fundamentals of 3D modelling and having those skills down will have them ready to take on other equivalent programs such as SolidWorks (A Common 3D Modelling Software For Mechanical Type of  Drawings).  This will have them ready for any higher education drafting classes as colleges and technical schools tend to stick with those two software suites for modelling mechanical drafting.”

There have been two updates on the Juniors as they launched their rockets at the Fredericksburg Rockets 2018 in Willow City on late April 26th. If you missed those launches, you can still view them on the Livestream videos from the weekend. They can be found at the following link:

Here are some pictures from Mr. Matthes of the Junior teams on their launch day. I have also included a synopsis of their rocket’s accomplishments that day.

Team 1’s rocket, labeled as rocket #34 had a beautiful lift off from the rail, but before reaching its full height went into a cork screw spin, nosed over and began a ballistic decent. It landed hard on its side in a field to the left of the Pad and charges didn’t deploy until hitting the ground. It was fully recovered which enabled them to get  data from the rocket. Their vehicle reached 588 mph, 0.78 Mach.

 

Team 2 had an awesome flight with full deployment  and recovery. The rocket flew to a height of 11,232 feet at a speed of 763.6 miles per hour. The vehicle broke the first sound barrier at 1.027 Mach. Unfortunately their camera did not turn on  properly so no flight video, and their payload which was a bag of Cheezits which was supposed to burst open due to pressure drop,  was still intact, the bag did not open. Congratulations on breaking the sound barrier.

Currently the Juniors have been completing things in order to present their Post Mission Analysis this week.  Team 1, was on Tuesday at 1:40 p.m. and Team 2 on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at FISD’s Central Office board room. All are welcome to attend. Come learn about the program. Asking questions of the presenting students is encouraged.

This will conclude this year’s reports on the Juniors. We will pick up with them next year as seniors when they begin their Goddard level project and attempt to launch at White Sands Missile Range.

The Seniors have approximately 23 days until Redbird 19 is scheduled for testing at White Sands Missile Range, on June 22.  This date is fairly permanent  but still at the mercy of the Army until closer to that time. Mr. Matthes will announce if there are any changes to that date.

Progress on the Redbird #19 rocket is ongoing. Students are in a waiting and coordinating process with SRM, a local machine shop with which  that they have the larger metal work contracted out. A helping advantage they have this year, is that FHS Alumni, Joseph Sanchez, hired on for the summer with Luke Morin at SRM. Joseph has been instrumental as a liaison between the team and the machine shop. Mr. Matthes states, that “this will surely help organizationally with the completion of the project.” He also says, “Kudos” to Joseph for his ability to acquire a summer job at SRM.

The Redbird #19 team is currently slated to depart for White Sands on June 20th with the test-minus-one(T-1) briefing  on the morning of the 21st, and final rocket preparations occurring that afternoon. Students are expected to give an overview of their rocket, payload and flight expectations for WSMR officials at the T-1 briefing.

Fredericksburg will be first to fly on the 22nd, therefore their rocket will be loaded onto the rail and left over night the 21st. This allows things to move faster the next morning as loading the payload, attaching the nose cone, loading oxidizer, and testing the rocket are all that will need to be done.

According to Mr. Matthes,  “As always, there is a chance the rocket won’t fly due to some technical failure occurring in the process of filling or ignition.  This sort of failure occurs regularly at White Sands as a testing grounds.  The difference between what the students do and industry does is cycling the process:  conducting a post mission analysis, correcting sources of problems and then having another go.  The lack of the opportunity to try again makes the individual testing of as many components as possible all the more important.  As of yet, the only testing performed has been on the altimeter which has proved positive for expected operation.  Time will tell what else the students have time to test.”

The team is running late on their completion  schedule due to their own delays and some things beyond their control and this will likely mean no preliminary testing of components, but they are expected to complete the rocket in time for launch.

Mr. Matthes had this to say about the senior class, “The class of 10 students together has accumulated over a 1000 hours of overtime (out of class engineering time) and has a few hundred to go before the project is done.  They have worked hard and will see the fruits of their labor continue over the summer. The students graduate Friday night and after 3 years, and 4 years for many of them, it is always bittersweet to send my students off.  The projects always delay the farewells until post launch but it is a significant leap for these young men and Miss Secrhist.  I am proud of all of them and look forward to all the great things ahead in their lives.  It is a diverse group of students with extensive interests and pathways.  I’m sure their paths will twist and turn as they move on but their trajectory looks promising and exciting.”

Congratulations to Harrison Spisak on s job well done! He was awarded the Engineering Academic Excellence Award, on May 7, at the FHS Academic Excellence Awards Banquet.

SystemsGo Texas Heads to Support SystemsGo New Mexico

Members of SystemsGo, including Gene Garrett, Rebekah Hyatt, and Scott Netherland traveled to Jal, NM today to lend support to  David Willden and the new SystemsGoNM as they prepare to execute their first launches for six New Mexico schools new to the program for this year. Members of SystemsGoNM have already been hard at work readying the new Discovery Education Launch Pad for Thursday’s launches.  They have also been prepping the Jal Fire Station for Stages 1 and 2.

Wednesday, SystemsGoNM and SystemsGo will join forces to train volunteers and clarify operating systems procedures. This will serve to help refresh members who were observers at Willow City last May, and be an easy paced on the job training session for them and others involved. This should help prepare them in order to make Thursday run smoothly. Training will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Jal Fire Station.

A reception for Sponsors, Volunteers and Dignitaries will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening in Hobbs, NM at the Baymont Inn and Suites. Attendees will listen to speakers instrumental to the launch of this new program. Refreshments will be served during the presentations.

Schools participating in the Jal launches include Carlsbad High School, Hobbs High School, Jal High School, Lake Arthur High School, Loving High School and Lovington High School.

Fredericksburg’s STEM Academy/Rocket Program-Spring Term Update #2 (February 21-March 31)

April 1st is tomorrow, so time is becoming a factor for the Fredericksburg STEM Academy as launch dates approach for the junior and senior groups. There are no fools here though, just  several groups of future engineers working hard to meet their timelines. With March behind them there is only a little over 6 weeks left  for the  junior group until Rockets 2017 and their May 18th test date. The seniors have approximately 60 days as Redbird 18 is scheduled for completion two weeks before school ends to allow for preliminary systems tests.

More on these groups and their current status reports will be later in the article.

Sophomores are currently taking mid-term exams. This is due to the new schedule for classes this year which puts a full year’s curriculum into one standard semester. They have been busy using AutoCAD to create multi view drawings of objects. Dimensioning and tolerancing of these drawings will be learned next, followed by isometric drawings and 3D modeling. The students have been printing models of their multiview drawings using the newly installed 3D printer. All 3  3D printers available now are working well.

The student aide, Colby Marthaler  has also been using the 3D   printers to print all the parts necessary to create a model of the Falcon 9 Rocket SpaceX uses to transport satellites and the Dragon spacecraft into orbit.

Juniors had CDR’s (Critical Design Reviews) due for their rockets by March 30. Unfortunately they are just getting to them. Students will have to be studious in order to meet their May 18th launch date due to being behind schedule at this time. The payload for this rocket is a rapid growth slime mold. They have designed the payload in order to create a controlled experiment in which they should be able to determine how flight impacts the mold’s growth, negatively or positively.

The design criteria for their rocket is a one pound payload and breaking the speed of sound therefore achieving a transonic state. Currently neither criteria has been met so the group has more work to do to accomplish their goals by their launch date.

Their mid-term which is a LabVIEW development project has come along well. They are creating a workable program which requires specific methods and functions in order to attain a goal of designing and fabricating a micro test stand for Estes motors. They will be connecting  a (DAQ) Data Acquisition unit to a computer and registering it to that computer in order to read sensors, and programming a control and DAQ Virtual Instrument in LabView in order to run the test stand.

March began with more fuel grain tests at test stand. Two tests were completed in the first week alone, consisting of many hours of work to accomplish each. A temperature sensor indicated a high enough value in order to cause a programmed shut down on the first test that week.  After investigation, it was found that a ‘electrical noise’ caused an anomaly which gave the sensor its reading, and that it was in fact not outside normal operating parameters. The actual test did not experience any temperature concerns.

The same fuel grain was able to be used again in a 20 second burn, which allowed students to achieve a cumulative 40 second burn on one fuel grain.  The shut down was disabled for the second burn,  allowing the data to still record the temperatures caused by the ‘electrical noise’, but not to stop the burn test and it was a  full success without any further exceptions.

Mr. Matthes was very pleased with these burns and stated , “All data was processed and showed again the test stand was producing verifiable data similar to theoretical expectations.”

Students began another round of testing this week. Six new fuel grains will be tested accounting for three tests each of two different fuel types students have been working on. The  hope is that they will cycle through smoothly due to the fuel grains being prepped prior to testing.

  Here Hannah Boubel is working with graphite in order to make ablative, which is a sacrificial material in the pre and post combustion chamber so the burn does not penetrate the liner and steel test cell.

Along with test stand work, the students have been hard at work on Rebird 18, their Goddard level rocket slated to launch at White Sands Missile Range on June 27th. Students have already contracted with Heartland  Enterprises and SRM Manufacturing for fabrications and parts have been supplied to them.

At this point in the process students are learning true cause and effect, and just how it can affect their outcomes.  The entire success of the vehicle from this point forward is contingent on the group not only working as a team as a whole, but also for each individual team to stay on top of their work and outcome. Many of the components are dependent on the progress of the others. Delays on one team’s  element directly affects the next  team creating delays down the line and strained time schedules.  Individual testing is conducted on each piece as it is finished.  Full up integration and testing of any systems that allow for ground based testing is scheduled for two weeks from the end of school when the rocket is due to be complete.

“They are well on their way to a successful vehicle.  The seniors will not have the luxury of adopting senioritis as there is still significant and mutually dependent work to be accomplished,” Mr. Matthes reported. “These next 60 days will be a true test of their team work, peer loyalty and persistence. ”

As the end of the school year approaches, these students are becoming more and more adept in their learning and knowledge as young and capable engineers. Their end of year rockets will be a testament to that learning, time and ability.

According to Mr. Matthes, “Students are becoming ‘plagued’ with knowledge and experience:  the more they know and become aware of, the more they have to take into consideration and the more challenging the process becomes.  However, it also makes for conditions more aligned with success.  Additionally, if we consider these students products of FHS and the FHS Engineering, then they should be welcomed by a market hungry for what they have to offer.”

The senior group is tentatively scheduled to launch their Goddard level rocket at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico the week of June 26-30. The current schedule for that event is as follows:

Second Term Update #1 (January 9-February 21)-Fredericksburg’s STEM Academy/Rocket Program

January  is past and February is waning quickly, but the spring program is really building. There are big goals and events  for each class group. This semester is where their learning  hits the pad literally for the junior and senior groups as they build toward Rockets 2017 and their end of class projects.  There are three class groups this semester as the sophomore class begins study and the freshman class is complete until they re-enter the program as sophomores in January of 2018.

The freshman have moved on due to the new accelerated block schedule, but at the end of the semester they all agreed that communication skills were what they felt they had developed the most. They found themselves to be much more comfortable and  proficient  when speaking in public. Their final projects, the orange juice production plants went well as reported by Mr. Matthes. The students were all very excited about the class and course study, but not about having to wait a whole year to return to the STEM Academy.

The sophomores are just beginning their 5th week of studies since they are new to the program for this year. Their studies to this point included learning to hand draw multi-view drawings, interpreting 3D objects, and learning engineering lettering which they have recently completed. With these skills accomplished, they will be moving on to the ACC Auto CAD course within the next week.

These students have been using two older 3D printers  for these projects. The printers have a relatively small build space and so limit what the students can produce on them. The district has recently received a new larger 3D printer, the MakerBot Z18 which will be available later this month. This will be a benefit to these students as well as both upperclassmen groups as it will allow for much larger production pieces and will give them the ability to prototype designs.

While junior and senior classes will use this printer more often, the sophomores will be the first to learn how to use it. Even though their current course study will still be focused on smaller printing jobs, prototyping and future uses will necessitate knowing how to use the new printer.

Juniors began work on January 23, on their transonic rocket that they will launch in Willow City in May. They have begun the initial stages of the Design and Development processes. A timeline and a problem statement have been created, and they are about midway through the research process.

They have a Critical Design Review (CDR) due before spring break. Unfortunately they have not been able to narrow down the scope of their research as of yet. This keeps them spread out as  a team, and means they have to make up ground in order to make the pre-spring break CDR  deadline.

They are researching rapid growth organisms for a possible payload for the rocket, and hope to be able to study how flight affects their growth.

On Friday, February 17, the juniors along with sophomores, Gloria Burns and Eston Cooke joined the juniors as Brian Evans of Space Propulsion Group provided instruction on the basics of mathematical modeling. At the end of the presentation, juniors had the opportunity to present models they had developed and then also do trouble shooting on their profiles.

The junior students were very receptive to Mr. Evans and his instruction, alleviating numerous roadblocks and enabling rapid progress in their modelling.

Juniors have been officially invited to begin learning and participation in fuel grain motor test burns, but currently seniors are the only ones conducting any test burns.

The seniors conducted their first hot fire test on Friday, February 17, while Dr. Evans from the Space Propulsion Group was in attendance. They accomplished a 10 second burn of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE).

According to Mr. Matthes, ” The test was extremely successful with outstanding data acquisition that showed the motor preformed nominally, according to expected design parameters.  This was very exciting to have such a good, clean burn, good data, and fitting expected performance.”

Heartland Enterprises and SRM Manufacturing created a newly designed injector plate.  This allowed the class to keep their Friday deadline.  In spite of the piece needing to be manufactured quickly for the project,  these companies came through and the product was, “beautifully machined and performed with 10% of expectation regarding oxidizer mass flow rate,” stated Mr. Matthes.

On January 27, the Fredericsburg Middle School 7th grade GT(Gifted and Talented) group presented their payload for the Redbird #18 Rocket to the senior STEM class. It consisted of a group of sensors to measure UV Light, methane, acceleratometer, and barometric pressure.

New this school year, Mr. Matthes started requiring after school and extra curricular hour work on senior projects. When asked how this senior group was doing with this on their project, here is what he had to say about the group.

“There have been  a solid group of students who have been putting time in during study halls and some others who have been able to commit extended numbers of hours outside of school time to keep things moving forward.  These senior students have worked phenomenally.  They bit off a lot to accomplish this year and are on target to meet all of their expectations.  It is quite remarkable having the opportunity and privilege to work with them.  A substitute recently commented that during my absence, walking into the classroom after the passing period between classes was like walking into a full-fledged workforce environment where students were all fully engaged, scheduling, designing, problem solving, and just plain working without any instruction to do so.  I believe the skills these students have honed over the last 4 years through this program and all their other coursework has created a ‘product’ that any college, industry, and organization would wish to recruit.”

Keep up the great work, seniors, what an amazing and glowing endorsement.

The STEM Academy group was encouraged to attend the movie, “Hidden Figures” on Friday, February 10th at Fritztown Cinema. About 35 students from the program attended.  Here is what a few of them had to say about the movie:

“The movie was about African-American women breaking social barriers in the engineering community at NASA. It should be your talent, skills, and work ethic that decide your position at your workplace, not your ethnicity or gender. I found it to be a fun/feel good movie that was well-directed and enjoyable to watch. I found myself caring about the characters and rooting for them throughout the movie which means the characterization was done well.  My favorite part of the movie was the climax when they shot the marine into orbit. The entire movie was building up to this and it was worth the wait.”–John West

“I found “Hidden Figures” to be a very inspiring and thought-provoking film. The primary idea that I took away from the movie was to “look past the numbers.” During the film, NASA mathematicians had difficulty making complex calculations due to there being no existing method available to make them. The protagonist of the film “looked past the numbers” and was able to use her intuition to come up with calculations that fit the situation. In rocket science, numbers are nothing without a physical attribute to tie them to. My favorite part of the movie was when the machine that made quicker calculations than humans malfunctioned and the protagonist was brought in to confirm them. This invoked the idea that machines, although they may be faster, can never replace the need for an engineer.”–Jacob Weinecke

First Term Wrap Up (Nov. 18-Dec. 21)- Fredericksburg’s STEM/Rocket Program

December is nearly over and Winter break starts today, but before we send the Fredericksburg High School STEM Academy home for Christmas,  we need to review what they have been working on these last four weeks, and try to wrap up the fall program.  January starts the spring program loaded with really big goals and events that this past fall has been building toward.  Each group’s learning will be evident in the success of this coming semester’s projects.

During the month of November the Freshman visited Toyota Manufacturing and Southwest Research Institute (SwRi).

20161121_140216The students were impressed with Toyota and how huge the plant itself is, as well as the difference in the type of automation used as compared to last month’s visit to Caterpillar. Toyota’s assembly line resemble Ford assembly lines. The components actually moved along on a line and each team had an assigned task as it moved by them. Caterpillar operated in stages where one team did several components before it moved to the next staging area.

Mr. Matthes remarked that ” The delivery logistics of parts to the assembly line was phenomenal!”

On December 13, the Freshman group visited Fischer and Wieser, Heartland Enterprises, and UT Aeromechanical Lab.

Fischer and Wieser and Heartland are Fredericksburg companies. They both demonstrated automation on a small-scale as compared to companies like Toyota and Caterpillar. Fischer and Wieser explained the importance of loyal employees and a family like environment.

Heartland is similar in framework and belief on how they treat their employees. Where as many companies prefer to hire very experienced candidates from other companies, Heartland prefers to hire inexperienced people and train them in their ways of operation. They find that by doing this they keep a certain working quality and alleviate the bad habits that experience can sometimes bring with it which can be adverse to the companies current operating practices and quality control initiatives.

Students at UT Aeromechanical Lab and Flow Field Imaging Lab in Austin, were working on ablative testing for high velocity projectiles or vehicles,  and a research lab studying  hydrogen combustion and anomalies that may exist with it. These anomalies must be understood before hydrogen combustion can be considered for fuel. They are also studying wind tunnel testing designed to help discern the tendencies of shock  for use in ramjet and hyper velocity propulsion systems.

Dr. Noel Clemens is the Principle Investigator for all experiments in the lab, and the primary decision maker. Jeremy Jagodzinski is the lab facilitator. He helps to support the research in the lab and also set up the visit for the students. Phillip Varghese oversees the Center for Aeromechanics Research which often collaberates with this lab.  Thank you to all of them for facilitating the tour.

Mr. Matthes stated that, “the students really loved the research facility.”

Aside from field trips to see first hand about automation and manufacturing, the freshman have been learning  about production/automation engineering. They are currently in the process of designing an orange juice production plant. Their product goal for the plant is to take raw material and produce packaged juice in palletized product bundles ready for sale. Jenny Weiser will be coming in January to see their presentations and evaluate and provide constructive criticism.

Sophomores will be entering the program for the second term, starting Jan. 23. ACC’s Auto CAD course will be their main focus learning to utilized specific skills and design elements.

The juniors flew their Generation 3 rockets recently. This provided several learning points that will be useful on their projects next semester. Students realized that even cutting edge design doesn’t always transfer well into the manufacturing ability of the vehicle. Failures in these construction and design frailties, resulted in irregular flight patterns. These mishaps translated into two days of Post Mission Analysis insuring that lessons from this would not carry over to next semester’s larger rocket project.

In January, the juniors will begin work on their one pound/one mile vehicles to be tested out at Willow City in May. This is considered a sounding rocket designed to break the speed of sound without breaking a ceiling of 13,000 feet while carrying a one pound payload.

Seniors have been very busy, and experienced both successes and set backs on their projects recently.  Testing on fuels is expected to begin in January as they are nearly complete with updates on test stand.

After manufacturing pieces for their small motor test stand out of 2024 aluminum, they discovered that this metal type cannot be welded. This resulted in having to procure another high strength aerospace aluminum which is conducive to welding. Once they find this they will have to begin again the manufacturing of the fuel grain containment system.

“These were very important lessons learned for all, them and me,” stated Mr. Matthes.

Preliminary Design Reviews were conducted on their Goddard level rocket, last week. Due to the set backs on test stand, previously  discussed, the group lost time they should have had to work on their rocket design and therefore have a bit of ground to make up there in order to have those completed by January’s end.

Fall Highlights (Oct. 1-Nov. 18)- Fredericksburg’s STEM/Rocket Program

It is mid November and time to  review once more all that the Fredericksburg High School STEM Academy has been working on throughout the past seven weeks.  Each group has new skills they are learning, goals they are working to achieve and events they are working towards.

During the month of October the Freshman visited Caterpillar Manufacturing,  where  Warren Houston, Caterpillar plant manager, acted as the groups’ host during their tour.  They also toured Aqua Power Cutting, where owner BJ Millard showed them around and gave demonstrations.  Mr. Millard’s two sons have both participated in the STEM Academy.

On Monday November 21, they will visit  Toyota, Center for the Intrepid, and Southwest Research Institute (SwRi).

They have also been learning about Electrical Engineering. Keith Kunz a representative of Teledyne, formerly Real Time Systems, was on site Thursday, November 10 for subject presentations.

The juniors have been studying aerodynamic drag, resistance, and impulse momentum theory.  They are completing work on the test stand burn models and the associated fuel grain burn simulations. After this they will be moving on to new heights, attempting to reach 1900 feet on  C6-Estes motors in Generation 3 rockets.  These rockets are designed using the same RockSim software used to design rockets they will launch at Willow City next year. This is a lesson in design and construction and each must match identically their design.

The  whole senior group made a trip to  NASA Johnson Space Center on Monday and Tuesday, November 7 and 8. Only two were unable to attend, one due to family complications and the other was attending State Marching Contest on Monday with the FHS Band but joined the group later.

On Monday they collectively made a Grant Presentation to NASA. Mr. Matthes reports that, “they did wonderfully.”

On Tuesday,  Ian  Kendrick,  Sterling Weaterford,  Nathan Bain and David Becker presented a flight readiness profile. “NASA was impressed with test-stand updates and the focus on analysis and improved data acquisition,” according to Mr. Matthes.

Students had time for fun while in Houston as well.  On Monday,  after dinner, students spent time at Kemah Boardwalk. Interestingly the “Crane Game” was the entertainment of the evening, pitting them against each other to see who could pluck the most stuffed animals.  Reportedly, Ricky Robles was the winner.

The STEM Academy would like to extend many thanks to Mr. Logan Minshew, FHS Counselor and CTE coordinator. He took the time to attend this field trip and drive the group.

In other senior news, even though there is still quite a bit more to be done on test-stand, they have made good strides and are progressing forward diligently. They are back at work with rocket design as well.

In a related note, Mr. Matthes reports that they held their first Engineering Advisory Committee meeting on Friday, November 11. Members present were Brian Evans (Space Propulsion Group), Jay Mallinckrodt (Heartland Enterprises), and Scott Netherland (SystemsGo). Mark Cornett, Allen Nance (Teledyne), Luke Morin (SRM Manufacturing), and Logan Minshew (FHS Career and Technology Coordinator) were unable to attend.
